Why is everything locked in American drugstores?

I was really surprised that almost every item is locked up and you have to ask a staff member to open it. I was buying 5 things, so I had to call someone 5 times — it felt more stressful than a normal, relaxed shopping experience, especially for cosmetics.</p> <p>Is it like this everywhere, or just in places like Manhattan? Doesn’t it get tiring for you to shop this way?
